The British School was established in 1992 to provide a high standard of British-style education for the expatriate community through the medium of English. The school follows the English National Curriculum. The curriculum in the Nursery concentrates on basic pre-writing, practical number and reading skills. There is much interaction through stories, songs, and discussions with the children's teachers. Reading and language receive priority. Oral language is emphasised and in mathematics the course offers practical work and the use of computers to develop numeracy, literacy and observation skills.
The Primary curriculum continues the core subjects of English, mathematics and science while the formal study of art, geography, history, music and religious education is begun. There is also a full physical education programme including music and movement, PE and games.
In the Senior classes pupils are prepared for the Common Entrance Examination and IGCSE. The curriculum includes the following: art, English, French, games, geography, history, mathematics, music, physical education, Polish Cultural education, religious education and science and technology. For those children who are not fluent in English there is an EAL programme with an emphasis on the needs of the individual child. A Sixth Form opened in September 2001, offering the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
The school occupies modern purpose-built accommodation on two sites not far from the city centre. To ensure that the school truly reflects a British school, it has been fully equipped with resources from the UK. Classrooms for the younger children have en-suite facilities, and all classrooms are designed to provide a light, warm and comfortable environment. There are well-equipped science laboratories, libraries, computer suites, art studios, music rooms and other specialist rooms. The school halls are equipped with PE material to supplement outdoor sports.
The school has large and pleasant playgrounds with separate activity areas. The school is large enough to offer a broad and in-depth curriculum with good facilities, yet retains a warm friendly atmosphere catering for the individual needs of the child. This enables new students to settle in quickly.
