It is the longest established private school in Southern Portugal. There is a bi-lingual Pre-School for children aged 3, 4, and 5. The School itself has two sections - the International (ages 5 to 18) and the National, which follows the Portuguese curriculum (ages 6 to 18). The International Section, in which the language of instruction is English, is divided into a Primary School (Years One to Six), a Middle School (Years 7, 8, 9) and an Upper School (Years 10, 11, 12, 13). Pupils prepare for GCSE examinations (CIE and Edexcel) in 12 subjects, including IT and Portuguese, with extra lessons where necessary in English-as-a-foreign language. The school offers a wide range of 'A' level courses and is the main centre south of Lisbon for UK examination boards. Pupils are from about 26 different nationalities. The teaching staff is fully qualified and experienced. A senior member of staff gives careers advice. The staff ratio is 1: 10. Weekly boarding is possible with families vetted by the school. Situated on the main East-West coastal road in the central Algarve, some 30 minutes from Faro International Airport, the school is served by eight school buses collecting from Luz to Faro. Purpose-built in nine hectares, it includes a self-contained Pre-School unit, four modern science laboratories, three computer rooms as well as extensive sports areas and facilities. A new school library has recently opened, the largest in Southern Portugal. Music, dance and drama play a significant role in school life. The school year runs from mid-September to the end of June, with breaks of about two weeks at Christmas and Easter, plus Portuguese national holidays. The teachers are skilled at helping those pupils needing extra support in English. |
