The International School Vale Verde in Lagos was founded to provide a broad-based education, leading to an internationally recognized qualification for the children of families based in the Western Algarve, Portugal. An English curriculum, based upon the Cambridge syllabus is followed to Advanced Level (AS & A2) in a wide variety of subjects taken at the end of Year 13 including: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, ICT, Business Studies, Economics, Portuguese, French, Sociology and Art and Design. KS2 and KS3 students are also offered Music, Drama and Food Technology.
Students in the school’s Bilingual Primary Section are taught key subjects in English with subjects such as Portuguese Culture, Physical Education, Drama, Music and the Arts being taught in Portuguese. Students are encouraged to become computer literate from an early age and ICT is increasingly integrated into the curriculum. Average class sizes are low, allowing for a considerable degree of individual attention and support in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The teaching combines the best of traditional with modern methods to ensure a high level of achievement. Creativity based on a sound understanding of the basics is emphasised, thus students are both challenged and encouraged to fulfil their potential.
Extra-curricular activities include a wide range of Sports, Music, Drama and Portuguese. In addition to the activities, educational, cultural and leisure trips are organised to local places of interest as well as excursions to other countries . Whole school events include Sports Day, Christmas concerts and drama productions. The students also play an active role in charity events and social welfare.
The school is housed in a modern, attractive two-storey building and two annexes, including a separate specialist dedicated Art room. Other facilities include: spacious classrooms, a modern Computer room, Canteen, Library, Theatre and Students’ common room. There is a swimming pool and a large all-purpose games court for recreational and sporting activities. The buildings are situated in tranquil surroundings, about 10 km west of Lagos, on the edge of Burgau village.
All teachers are highly experienced and well qualified, representing a diversity of nationalities.
