Learning Support Programme
St Dominic’s International School is the only school in Portugal authorized to deliver all three programmes of the International Baccalaureate Organization: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). The school's strong commitment to IBO educational philosophy sits comfortably with the Dominican commitment to education and the search for truth reflected in the motto Veritas.
The School has a Board of Governors responsible for defining policy for the school. A School Management Team guides educational and all operational matters. The School is a private co-educational day school serving students aged 3-18 years providing international education of the highest calibre through the three IBO programmes.
The Junior School offers: English, Portuguese, mathematics, social studies, information technology, art, music, physical education and social education, under the umbrella of the IBPYP in Nursery, Kindergarten and Grades 1-5. Class size in the Junior School is 22 students.
In the Senior School the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, with full certification, is offered in Grades 6 to 10 in classes of 18 pupils. In Grades 11 and 12 students prepare for the International Baccalaureate leading to a full IB Diploma or, in some cases, to IB Certificates.
There is also a multi-faith Religious and Values Education programme from Nursery to Grade 10. English as an Additional Language (EAL) and support for students with Special Needs (SEN) are part of the educational services. A wide range of co-curricular activities is offered in the Senior School.
Fully qualified teachers are employed from international locations; there are 12 nationalities in the teaching staff of whom 52 are women and 20 men.
Classes begin in early September and run to the end of June with breaks for Christmas and Easter and shorter breaks mid-term. The school day is 08: 30 to 15: 30 hours with eight teaching periods for 180 days.
The school is mainly housed in two one-storey buildings and provides a self-contained Nursery/Kindergarten, 45 classrooms, two gym halls, three art rooms, two libraries, science and technology laboratories, music and computer rooms and a multi-faith meditation room. There are also outdoor facilities for Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Badminton and Athletics.
The school has an open admission policy, but requires reports from previous schools; diagnostic tests in mathematics and English may be required.
