Learning Support Programme
The Vilamoura International School (CIV) was established in 1984 and is set in the ever expanding Vilamoura area. It is a private school with Portuguese and English Studies, hosting over 30 nationalities, from Kindergarten to 12?Ano /Year 13. CIV is governed by a Board which includes the Director and heads of both studies.
The English studies provides an adapted version of the British Curriculum with Portuguese as a compulsory subject, taught from beginner’s level. From Year 5 students adopt French as a Foreign Language and German is also available. CIV is a centre for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Students sit the Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations in Year 9 (Key Stage3) in the core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science. CIV follows a general course of studies and students sit the International General Certificate in Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Year 10/11 in subjects which include: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, co-ordinated Science, ICT, Portuguese, French, History, Art, Physical Education and Physical Education Theory. In the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level (Year 12) students are encouraged to take 4/5 subjects of those on offer and their best 3 through to the Advanced (A) Levels in Year 13. Depending on their subjects students generally qualify for the ICE (International Certificate of Education) Award in Year 11 and the AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) in Year 13. CIV students may also sit for the DELF - Dipl?e d'?udes en langue francaise. CIV alumni have studied /are currently studying in universities in Portugal, United Kingdom, Japan, USA, Brazil, Australia, Czech Republic, Spain, et.al.
All academic staff is fully qualified with experience in national or international schools and the turnover of staff is very low.
Extra curricula activities include music, yoga, ballet, tennis, swimming, chess, football school and karate. These may vary annually.
CIV is purpose-built, set in nature and away from busy roads. It has 30 classrooms, 3 laboratories, a library, computer laboratory, art laboratory, gymnasium, music room, ballet room, a hall and a dining room. The sports grounds accommodate 2 tennis courts and an Astroturf football field.
The academic year begins in mid September and ends at the end of June. CIV celebrates the national holidays and has a two week break for Christmas and Easter. The school days are from 09. 00 to 16. 10/16. 50, depending on the level of study. Transport is available.
CIV runs a two bi-lingual Summer School Programmes during July and August (Kids Summer School). The CIV educational project will apply to both programmes: Junior Summer School (3 to 5 years of age) and Summer School (6 to 12 years of age) The key skills are: Communication; Interpretation; Problem solving; Conceptualization; Investigation; Self-evaluation; Autonomy; Team work; Cooperation; Knowing your body and Physical fitness.
