Puerto Rico Education
Puerto
Rico enjoys a warm, tropical climate with temperatures
of around 82 F (27 C) throughout the year. The
temperature in the south is usually a few degrees higher
than the north and temperatures in the central interior
mountains are always cooler than the rest of the island. The
official languages are Spanish and English with Spanish
being the primary language. English is taught as a
second language in public and private schools from
elementary levels to high school and at the university
level. Since Puerto Rico is part of the United
States, the island's currency is the U.S. dollar. The 3.966 million people that inhabit
the island of Puerto Rico make it one of the most
densely populated islands in the world. There are about
1, 000 people per square mile, a ratio higher than within
any of the 50 states in the United States. It is
estimated that some 2 million Puerto Ricans have
migrated to the United States. San Juan, officially Municipio de la
Ciudad Capital San Juan Bautista (Municipality of the
Capital City, Saint John the Baptist), is the capital
and most populous municipality in Puerto Rico, an
unincorporated territory of the United States. |
