Learning Support Programme
The British International School was founded in 1994 to meet the needs of expatriate or Russian parents who wish their children to be taught in English using the English National Curriculum, as adapted to meet the needs of international pupils.
The principal aim of the school is to provide an exciting, caring and intellectually stimulating environment in which children will thrive. It a caters for the individual learning and social needs of children and enables them to achieve their highest possible academic level. The school has three sections. In the Nursery and Reception classes, (3-5 years), the curriculum concentrates on basic pre-writing, practical number and reading skills. There is interaction through stories, songs and discussions with the children's teachers. Reading and language development receive priority. There is a special handwriting programme. Oral language is emphasized and in mathematics the programme includes much practical work. In the Primary classes, (5-11 years), the curriculum continues the core subjects of English, mathematics and science while the formal study of art, French, Russian, geography, history, music and religious education is gradually introduced. There is also a full programme of physical education.
In the Secondary classes, (11-18 years), there is specialist teaching. Core subjects are English, mathematics and science with the foundation subjects of art, geography, history, music, French, Russian, information technology, religious studies, PE and games.
In Years 10 and 11 the pupils are prepared for the International GCSE examinations in eight to ten of the above subjects. Year 12 and 13 pupils are prepared for the International Baccalaureate Diploma and university entrance. The school occupies seven modern purpose-built campuses. Three are in an attractive area of Moscow adjacent to the Temeryazevsky Park. Outside there are very pleasant grounds and play areas. The other three are in the south of the city adjacent to the Bitsevski Park metro station. An infant school opened on the Rosinka residential campus in September 2003.
To ensure that the school truly reflects a British school, it has been extensively resourced from UK. Classrooms for the younger pupils have modern en-suite cloakroom and bathroom facilities. The classrooms have been designed to provide a light, warm and comfortable environment. The assembly hall is equipped with PE material to supplement outdoor sports facilities.
