School Summary:
Founded 1997
110 students, age 4-18
International curriculum, UK, US
22 staff

Founded in 1997 as International High School Belgrade, the school became the British International School in July 2003 and extended the age range to cover the primary phase of education. The school moved in August 2003 to a new, purpose-built, campus on the edge of the city. The new campus provides separate facilities for Primary and Secondary children in a pleasant location with plenty of secure, outdoor space. Secondary students have access to a new, fully-functioning science laboratory and specialist computer laboratory with digital projection facilities to facilitate quality teaching.
The Primary department provides an English National Curriculum covering the Early Learning Goals of the reception class and the National curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2 to older children. On entry to the reception class, children will undertake Baseline Assessment in order to chart accurately their progress throughout their educational experience. Housed in their own, newly-constructed building children have access to new, high-quality resources and professionally trained UK teaching staff. The Secondary school provides an enriched English National curriculum Key Stage 3 and 4 to students of both diplomatic and local families. As IHSB, British International School was the first International School in Belgrade to be awarded International Centre status by Cambridge University for the IGCSE and A-level programmes. Recognized in the US as a High School and by the UK Department of Education as an Overseas School, BIS uses the Cambridge University International Curriculum for IGCSEs and A-levels in conjunction with the diploma of the University of Nebraska, where required by certain students. BIS supports a range of international university entrance examinations and pathways. An English as a Second Language (ESL) programme is offered to students who require these special tutorial classes. BIS is an ETS recognized High School, number 799001.
BIS is governed by an elected and appointed School Board. The faculty members are highly qualified and, with the many positive developments in Belgrade, are increasingly being recruited from international locations. The school actively promotes family involvement, where appropriate, utilizing parental skills in the classrooms.
BIS qualifications are formally recognized by the Serbian Ministry of Education and the school is the only authorized Duke of Edinburgh Award centre in the Balkans. This prestigious award offers students recognition for personal development, community service and expedition completion.
Although there is no entry examination, students must be able to prove a required fluency of English suitable to their course requirements. ESL provision is available where appropriate.
