South African School

Dominican Convent School

Situated in the heart ‘old’ Johannesburg, between the City of Johannesburg and Bedfordview , Dominican Convent School is accessible for families living in Northern, Southern, Western, Eastern and Central Johannesburg areas. Indeed we have pupils from not only all over South Africa but from overseas countries too. This means a student body rich in diversity, where people from many different cultures and socio-economic groups live and learn together in an atmosphere that encourages respect not only for oneself but for others too. Diverse and dynamic, we move with the times. Innovative teaching methods and access to the latest technology go hand in hand with old fashioned morals and values. A school for boys and girls, we educate children from toddler to matric. We offer facilities for both day schooling where pupils participate in academic and co-curricular activities until 15h50 each day Monday to Thursday and weekly or termly boarding. We welcome visitors and should you wish to view our school, please do not hesitate to phone us so that we may arrange a time to meet you.

Dominican Convent School welcomes Mr Graham Howarth as Headmaster

Dominican Convent School warmly welcomes Mr Graham Howarth who has joined Dominican Convent School as Headmaster in May 2014, the beginning of the second school term. His many years experience in school leadership as Deputy Headmaster of Benoni High School (1993 to 1996),   Executive Principal of Damelin  Braamfontein and Randburg (1997– 2002) and Headmaster of St Peter’s College (2002-April 2014), as well as his  passion for education stand him in good stead and make him the ideal leader to guide  Dominican Convent School forward.

Graham is warmly welcomed as a member of the Dominican Convent School family where he aims to continue with the vision and mission of the Founding members of Dominican Convent and to build on the century of success that this school has achieved. Equally, it is important to him that the school provides Dominican students with an education that will prove relevant in a  modern age and one that will become the springboard for both personal and professional success after school.

Congratulations to the five grade nine pupils selected to go to Stowe School for the next academic year

Congratulations to the five grade nine pupils selected to go to Stowe School for the next academic year. We wish you a year full of successful challenges, lasting friendships, the opportunity to make positive impacts on the lives of those you meet, and experiences to stand you in good stead throughout your lives as you engage with diverse people in our ‘global village’.

The Stowe Exchange Programme began in 2008 through the generosity of Sir Richard Branson and other benefactors. Thanks to the ongoing support provided by benefactors from Stowe School, 30 Grade nine learners from Dominican Convent School have had the opportunity to study there for one year.

The Stowe Scholars programme forms part of our commitment to international communication, and teaching our children to open their minds and “think big” as they grow up to be citizens of an increasingly complex world

These programmes continue to grow and include staff and children placements, and touring and visiting opportunities to share who we are and what we represent. All of these form an important part of a quality education, and whether we are chosen for one of the programmes or simply learning from the rigorous selection processes, the opportunities offered by Dominican will continue to open minds and hearts as they build relationships across international boundaries.

2014/ 2015 selection once again proved as exciting and challenging as that of previous years. This year we welcomed Peter Deakin and Gemma Bonner. They spent a week observing and interviewing Grade 9 pupils and finally made a short list of 10 learners who all had to write the Stowe entrance examination. Once again the selection task was one that proved an exceptionally difficult one as many more students could have been included in this list.

It was announced in High School Assembly this morning, Wednesday 2nd April, that the following children will go to Stowe for the next academic year:

Thabang Khambule

Gislaine Batubenge

Mpho Manalo

Nonhlanhla Maclare

Neo Mayeza

The accompanying staff will be Gretha Roberts and Lyn Fortmann, who have been chosen in order for interaction about the Maths and Science syllabi to continue.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the selection process.
