Writing for publication

Facilitator:  Prof. Chris Kapp

Registration fee:  R2200

Background:

The “publish or perish” syndrome has hit higher education institutions with a bang.  Number crunching has become the name of the game.  Academics who fail to publish, may forfeit all chances of promotion.  Publication outputs of individuals, departments and faculties are publicly compared.  Recent research has indicated that the authors of published research are “aging” (above the age of 50 years) and that the vast majority of publications come from this age group.  This workshop will attempt to make a contribution in helping novice authors to prepare their research findings in such a way that they are accepted for publication.

Target group:

“Young” (novice) academics who want to get their research published in accredited journals.

Programme:   (A selection of the following modules can be included in the final programme.  The content of the final programme will be determined by the needs of the participants in the programme.)

  • The purposes of writing for publication
  • An analysis of publication guidelines of selected journals
  • Typical errors of authors, according to editors
  • The characteristics of “good” writing – an analysis of selected “well-written” articles
  • Talking to editors and experienced authors
  • Getting started – overcoming the barriers
  • Writing introductions
  • Structuring the article
  • Keeping the focus, the line of argument, the “golden thread”
  • Using tables, graphs and illustrations, and other “technical” matters
  • Writing conclusions
  • Fine-tuning to get one’s paper accepted
