Learning Support Programme
The Benjamin Franklin International School was founded in 1986 as a non-profit, independent, co-educational day school to meet the needs of the local and international communities for an authentic American education, a diverse student population and the use of the cultural opportunities around the city of Barcelona. The school offers students two diplomas: the American High School Diploma and the Spanish Baccillerato preparing students to attend universities in the United States, Spain and worldwide. BFIS is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and sponsored by the Office of Overseas Schools of the US Department of State and is authorized by the Spanish Ministry of Education. The school is a member of MAIS.
The American-style curriculum includes a wide range of AP courses and specialized classes in Spanish, Catalan and French. BFIS intends to be an IB Diploma school in the 2011-2012 academic year. The extra-curricular activities include sports, music, drama, digital film making, Student Council, National Honor Society, Model United Nations, Math Team and Yearbook. College and guidance counseling services are available for all grades. ESL classes are available for grades 1-10 and SFL in grades 1-12. Ninety-nine per cent of BFIS graduates go on pursue post-secondary opportunities.
The teaching staff is experienced and certified in their grade level or subject area. Nearly all have advanced degrees. Fifty-one percent are American, 26% are Spanish and 23% are third country nationals. There are specialists in music, art, physical education, computer, learning support, and library sciences.
The student body is 30% American, 32% Spanish, and 38% from 31 other countries.
The school day is from 08: 50 to 16: 00 for all students. The 2011/2012 academic year will begin on September 1, and end on June 21, with standard American and host country school holidays, for a total of 178. 5 instructional days. The campus is located in Sarri? the upper, residential part of Barcelona, with easy access to public transportation. A school bus service is available.
In addition to classrooms, there are fully equipped science labs, two computer labs, two art rooms, a music room, library, and multimedia lab.
