The school was founded in 1961. The school year is approximately 180 days long with two semesters extending from September to January and February to June. The school is governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. The American Ambassador has traditionally accepted the Honorary Presidency of the Board. The K-12 program is accredited by the by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools as well as the Spanish Ministry of Education and the school is a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization. All students follow the American curriculum with English as the language of instruction. Spanish citizens also pursue the official Spanish program. In the Upper school, students may pursue a course of study leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. All students are required to study Spanish, either as a foreign language or in the Programa Oficial. The school testing program includes the Iowa Achievement test and the PSAT test; ASM is a test site for the SAT and ACT. The Lower School offers a hands-on approach to learning with music, art, technology, PE and Spanish integrated into the school day by specialist teachers. Both the official Spanish Program and a Spanish-as-a-Second-Language Program are offered. The school offers an Optimal Match program for grades 1-8, including ESL, a learning resource center and counseling. The school has three full-time guidance counselors, two librarians and a full-time and a part-time school nurse. Enrolment as of May 2008 was 860 students, including approximately one-third American nationals, one-third Spanish nationals, and one-third from 52 other countries. The school campus consists of three main buildings, 12 km from Madrid, near Aravaca, with ample room for outdoor activities. Facilities include a gymnasium, Upper and Lower School Libraries, cafeteria, infirmary, four computer labs, four portable laptop labs, tennis courts, football field, race track, baseball diamond and weight room. The Center for the Arts includes art classrooms, music classrooms with practice rooms, photography lab, an English/drama classroom, a 600-seat auditorium with dressing rooms and a large multi-purpose room. |
