Campbell University was established on January 5, 1887, as Buies Creek Academy by James Archibald Campbell. It became Campbell Junior College in 1926 and a senior college in 1961. It gained university status on June 6, 1979, when it adopted its current name. The university covers around 850 acres in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
