Study at La Salle University
La Salle University is a private, co-educational, Roman Catholic university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university is named after St. Jean-Baptiste de la Salle. It was founded in 1863 by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. La Salle offers degrees and programs in more than 50 academic areas. The university is organized into the following academic divisions: La Salle University sponsors more than 20 varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Explorers. They compete in the NCAA's Division I and are members of the Atlantic Ten Conference. The Explorers have won several championships, including the 1954 NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship and the 1980 AIAW Field Hockey Championship. The campus of La Salle is in Philadelphia, PA, which is a large city. Its Roman Catholic nature is one of the defining aspects of the school. La Salle is a private, not-for-profit institution. Degrees at the school include, at the school's highest level, the Doctoral degree. La Salle has a greater breadth of degree programs (majors) than most colleges of its size. The school is known for its programs in media, business and management, and nursing and emergency medicine. Admission at La Salle is selective, not open to all who apply. Three quarters of students in 2007 had SAT verbal scores of at least 480. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 470 and 580. La Salle has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at the school is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality. In 2007, La Salle had 5,994 students enrolled (4,495 full-time equivalent). Full-time students are the norm at the school. La Salle offers dorm rooms to a higher percentage of its students than do most colleges.
