Study at Ohio Wesleyan University
Ohio Wesleyan University, commonly referred to as Wesleyan or OWU, was established in 1842. It was originally a nonsectarian liberal arts institution for men. In 1877, the Ohio Wesleyan Female College which was founded in 1853, merged with OWU. OWU's recent enrollments have been more than 1,500 students at its 200-acre campus in Delaware, Ohio. Students of Ohio Wesleyan University are awarded the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, or Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees. Courses in the fields of history, physical education, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, environmental studies, fine arts, music, women’s and gender studies, zoology, theater and dance, education, English, and journalism, among others. The athletics department of Ohio Wesleyan University fields sports teams in golf, lacrosse, soccer, football, baseball, and softball. Nicknamed the Battling Bishops, the teams compete in the NCAA's Division III and have been the winners of several championships. Ohio Wesleyan University is located in a town not far from a more urbanized area, in Delaware, OH. The school is officially a United Methodist school. Ohio Wesleyan University is a private, not-for-profit institution. Degree levels at the school top out at the Bachelor's degree. One of the good things about Ohio Wesleyan University is its wide range of programs leading to degrees. Students at the school often study mathematics, science, and fine arts. The admissions department at Ohio Wesleyan University does not accept all those who apply. Most students' verbal SAT scores were in the range of 530 to 650 in 2007. A quarter of students admitted in 2007 scored 650 or higher on the math SAT. Students at Ohio Wesleyan University benefit from the low student/teacher ratio. The school's tenure system is geared toward rewarding and keeping the most valuable professors. By paying its faculty better than most schools, Ohio Wesleyan University tries to attract and retain a high quality teaching staff.
