Learning Support Programme
Founded by Mrs M Crist Fleming in 1956, TASIS integrates an American and International Baccalaureate education with a European cultural experience. TASIS is accredited by CIS and NEASC. The School offers a boarding program to grades 7-12 and a day option to local students in grade Pre-K - 13. The High School (Grades 9-12) offers a full college-preparatory program in English, history, arts, mathematics, sciences and languages (French, Spanish and Italian). Elective courses available are art history, economics, architecture and design, modern European history, studio art, photography, and theater. Students may pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, take IB Certificate courses, or take a range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The School offers intensive instruction in English as an Additional language. The Post Graduate year provides a special year of studies for high school graduates. The average class size of 13 and a high proportion of resident faculty assure personal attention. Course-related travel takes students to major cultural centers throughout Europe, and the school relocates to Verbier and Crans-Montana for one week of skiing in January. The school is an ETS and ACT college testing center and provides experienced college counseling. Sports, both inter-scholastic and recreational for boys and girls, such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, swimming, riding, yoga, running, and dance, are an integral part of TASIS life.
Summer school in July and August offers intensive language instruction in ESL, French, Italian, arts and engineering. About 25% of students are of American parentage; the remaining students represent 55 other nationalities. The graduating classes attend major colleges and universities throughout the USA, Europe and Asia as well as US colleges in Europe. The school occupies the 17th-century Villa de Nobili and the surrounding estate and buildings and overlooks Lake Lugano, about one hour from alpine ski areas. The seven-acre campus encompasses 19 buildings, 40 classrooms, 5 science labs, 10 dormitories, a 30, 000-volume library, IT facilities, art studio/photographic lab and a sports complex. Nearby soccer fields, tennis courts, swimming pools, riding stables and other athletic facilities are also used. In 2010 TASIS opened three elegant and state-of-the-art facilities: a theater, classroom building, and dormitory/classroom/faculty apartment/Health Center complex. Admission is open to qualified students interested in a strong college-preparatory education and is based upon evaluation of work and recommendations from a student's previous school. Financial aid and scholarships are available and awarded on the basis of merit and need.
