STUDY PROGRAMMES: ENGLISH
OVERVIEW

BELL’S College offers a bachelor’s, masters or doctorate in the field of English. Applicants for the Bachelor’s Degree must take 65 units arts course work and 65 units in their major subject of English. The College undergraduate English major is designed to provide the flexibility in the selection of liberal arts courses from broad groupings to augment the professional development of the student. Master’s degree candidates must hold a valid bachelor’s degree (the equivalent) and are required to take 45 units of course work in addition to the writing of a dissertation. Course work may be omitted by examination, by evaluation of life/work experience, or on the recommendation of the supervising professor. However, the dissertation/thesis requirement may not be omitted except in the case of VPG candidates who may submit a published or an unpublished work in lieu of a thesis or dissertation. Books and materials will be supplied be by the university or made available in the student’s geographic area.

TIME FRAME

Anticipated time for completing course work and/or thesis-dissertation requirements:

Bachelor’s program : 36 months
Masters program : 18 months
Doctoral program : 36 months

Students may work on their own time and at their own pace. Credit is given for life/work experience in the field. An additional three months may be required for graduate programs in order to accommodate examinations and dissertation/thesis defence.

The General English course
The General English course is designed to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of learners - from those who have little or no knowledge of the English Language to the more advanced students wishing to become experts.
During the period of their studies students are encouraged to take one or more of the following examinations:


1 University of Cambridge examinations (UCLES) - Key English Test to Proficiency ertificate
2 International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
3 Test of English for International Communications (TOEIC)
4 Spoken English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
5 General English courses are available all year round.


The Business English course is designed to meet the needs of students wishing to use English communicatively for business.

During the course of their studies students are encouraged to take either the University of Cambridge Business and English Certificate or the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry English for Business examination.
Business English courses are also available all year round.

The English Conversation course is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to improve their speaking and comprehension skills above all other.

Students get the opportunity to participate in debates, role-play etc.
English Conversation courses are available in the summer time depending on demand.

Course Aims

The course is designed to improve the student’s ability and confidence in the four areas of language skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. This will prepare you for university study in UK.
A comprehensive course providing a minimum of 15-hour tuition per week is available to students of Accountancy, Business Management and ICT courses. In addition to tuition, the course includes all levels of study: Elementary, Intermediate and advanced.

Self Study Facilities
The Language Centre has its own multi-media facility, offering satellite television, video and audio players, multimedia PCs and reference materials. These are all located in the library, which is easy accessible.
