The Digital Design Studio

The Glasgow School of Arts

The Digital Design Studio (DDS) is driven by an ethos which ensures that the DDS remains a special place to learn, work and do business. We encourage our students and staff to "think out of the box". By ensuring a true multi disciplinary mix, we actively promote new, visions, perspectives, insights and knowledge. In essence we wish to foster and fuse the creativity of Artists' with the intellectual rigour of Scientists', with education fueling the desire for research and knowledge.

I hope you enjoy learning more about our courses and research. We welcome the opportunity of a dialogue, in which we can explore your ideas and interests for our mutual benefit.

Welcome to the Digital Design Studio at The Glasgow School of Art.

  • On the MPhil 2D/3D Motion Graphics each student has their own dedicated high performance workstation.
  • Academic backgrounds of students on the multi-disciplinary masters include, Architecture, Astro-physics, Ceramics, English Literature, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Marine Engineering, Marketing, Medicine, Multi Media Technology, Photography, Physics, Product Design Engineering, Psychology and Textiles & Fashion.
  • 35% of our students are from overseas.
  • The student male / female mix is close to 50%
  • Our Research focuses on 3D real time interaction, Advanced Visualisation, User Orientated Interfaces, Photo Realism & Collaborative Working.
  • Research at the DDS has resulted in new paradigms of user orientated interfaces, which includes advanced haptics, spatialised sound and gesture interaction.
  • Our research is focused on application areas in the Automotive, Architectural, Education, Medical, TV & Entertainment and Oil & Gas Industries.
  • Our research is informed by a vision of Replacement Reality which we define as:- The ability to interact with highly credible digital models in a natural and intuitive manner, unencumbered by intrusive equipment, using your senses of touch and hearing as well as vision
  • Our multi-disciplinary approach helped us to become the first Art School to hold an EPSRC Research Grant.
  • Our research is focused on application areas in the Automotive, Architectural, Education, Medical, TV & Entertainment and Oil & Gas Industries.

LOCATION & FACILITIES

The Digital Design Studio is based in the picturesque Bellahouston Park in the south side of Glasgow. The Studio is housed in the House For An Art Lover, a recently-built testament to the architectural genius of the internationally renowned architect, artist and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. STUDIO RESOURCES

The resources deployed at DDS reflect the latest technologies in both teaching and research facilities. Each Teaching Studio is equipped with high-end 2D/3D graphics workstations, incorporating 3D modelling, animation, compositing and editing systems that give a flexible and functional workflow for students developing skills in these areas. A Sound Editing Suite facilitates soundtrack creation and editing, with Digidesign systems running ProTools and Waves software for full audio playback, translation and mastering capability.

RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATORS

The DDS regularly organises research technology demonstrations. Organisations wishing to explore the opportunities for fully funded or collaborative research projects are encouraged to make contact for exploratory discussions

OUR CORE RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDE:

  • State of the art CyberTouch and CyberGrasp devices that allow for touch and force enabled applications with gesture-based control.

  • Polhemus FASTRAK a realtime six-degrees-of-freedom tracking system that can accurately pinpoint where a user's head & hands are in 3D space.

  • Multi-pipe SGI Onyx2 systems allowing for high quality visualisation of complex data in real-time.

  • Lake Huron Workstation with a 16-channel speaker array providing the capability to spatialise sound.

  • Large scale immersive workbench and display wall both of which project 3D images into space for the user to interact with.
