Dr
Cristina Leston-Bandeira (email C.C.Leston-Bandeira@hull.ac.uk ) Why Should I Study Politics
at Hull?
Politics is an exciting subject.
The challenges posed by international terrorism, environmental
degradation, the international drugs trade and money laundering are all
political, and studying politics will help you understand them better.
Politics profoundly affects the lives of millions of people, and
Politics graduates acquire a breadth and depth of knowledge and skills
appropriate to a wide and attractive range of professions. Numerous national and
international surveys confirm that our Department has long been regarded
as one of the finest in Europe. We offer a wide and fascinating range of
programmes, our research is internationally renowned, our employer
networks are second to none, and the Quality Assurance Agency recently
awarded us a near perfect score of 23 out of 24 points for teaching
quality. At Hull we take a practical
as well as theoretical approach to study. That’s why we allow members
of all our programmes to apply for a term as an intern, working for a
Westminster MP or another senior public figure at Westminster or
elsewhere. We have excellent support structures, and many students
returning from Westminster tell us that this has been one of the most
important and enjoyable experiences of their lives, and especially
helpful in securing employment after graduation. What Will I Study?

Literature and Politics Tell Me More About your Degree Programmes
Our internationally renowned
Politics degree gives you a broad understanding of the discipline.
After an introduction to the discipline it lets you tailor your learning
by choosing your own modules from the many on offer in Hull’s
celebrated elective system. Fascinated by politics but not sure you want
to specialise yet? This could be for you. Our popular Politics and International Relations degree gives you a firm
grounding in international relations and organisations, strategy and
security. We take you behind the headlines to study in depth topics such
as wealth, poverty, international and non-governmental organisations and
military strategy – the issues that drive international politics
today. International
Relations with International Political Economy is attractive to many
international as well as United Kingdom students. If you hope to work in
international organisations, multinational corporations or the media
this degree can help you achieve your goal. War
and Security Studies is an exciting new degree which is much in
demand. You will come to understand the nature and political functions
of war and armed conflict. Whatever your views we will encourage you to
express them by creating an open atmosphere which facilitates free
debate and friendly controversy. In our unique four-year BA
British Politics and Legislative Studies you will spend your third
year at Westminster doing fieldwork and taking academic seminars. You
will work closely with an experienced MP such as (to give some recent
examples) William Hague, Chris
Smith, Austin Mitchell, Michael Howard, Virginia Bottomley, Ann
Widdecombe and Stephen Twigg.
As a bonus, when you graduate you may qualify for the prestigious
Licentiateship of the City and Guilds Institute. European
Government and Politics is another exciting new degree. The
rediscovery of Europe, both East and West, remains an imperative for
European governments and policy-makers. So if you are keen to have a
better understanding of the new Europe that has emerged since the
collapse of the Berlin Wall this could be the choice for you. Our
BA in Public Policy will
be a big step towards a career in public service management, public or
private sector policy analysis and international or humanitarian
non-governmental organisations. Among the topics you will study are
globalisation and its impact on domestic policy, and the increasing role
of transnational corporations in policy development. How Will I Learn?
Small
group seminars of around 8-12 students are a particular feature
of our teaching. Lectures will give you basic information and sometimes
a lot more – you may even find yourself in a dramatic simulation of an
international negotiation! In seminars and tutorials you will explore,
analyse and criticise, often expanding into related, even surprising,
areas. And it is there that you will hone those transferable skills so
vital to employment prospects – in public speaking, teamwork, debate,
marshalling evidence and academic analysis. What Are You Looking For in a Candidate?
Because your application will
be considered on its merits we do not make a standard offer. As a
guideline, however, for students with A levels we normally expect 3
passes at around BCC, except for British Politics and Legislative
Studies (BBB) and Politics and International Relations (BBC). We take
Key Skills into account as an additional consideration but do not
require it. We have no preference as to
what you have studied and you need not be taking Politics – actually
our best students have included disaffected scientists. This flexibility
reflects the fact that though our academic expectations are high we are
keen to attract you if you have ‘something extra’ to offer, whether
by way of life experience or breadth of interest. So if you are not a
standard A-level entrant don’t worry: we will look after you
carefully, and you will be amazed how quickly things will fall into
place. What do Previous Graduates do?
Our graduates are well-equipped
for a wide range of employment: from journalism and television to law,
from the UN/EU to international charities. And – you never know –
you may even end up following other Hull graduates into the House of
Commons.
