The LSE is the leading social science institution in the world. The School's reputation as a global leader has been built up over the hundred years since it was founded.

Beatrice and Sidney Webb established the LSE in 1895 to contribute to the improvement of society by promoting the impartial study of its problems, and the training of those who were to translate policy into action.

We remain faithful to our tradition. Experts at the School work closely with political leaders, business corporations and public sector officials.  LSE Departments consistently receive the highest possible marks for their teaching and research, confirming our commitment to academic excellence.  6 former members of staff are Nobel Prize winners and many leaders of national governments and over 30 current Members of the British Parliament are LSE alumni.

The LSE Summer School offers an opportunity for you to share this tradition of excellence. The programme has become internationally renowned since it was established in 1989 and has expanded extensively with more than 2,600 participants in 2004.

The extensive range of courses covers the breadth of the social science expertise available at the LSE. Courses range from traditional core Economics and Finance subjects to those concerned with contemporary politics and management practice. Whichever course you choose will provide you with a valuable contribution to your chosen field, whether it be studying for a degree or in your professional career.

The programme is based on regular undergraduate courses taught at LSE and courses are taught by LSE faculty therefore you will find the courses academically challenging and intellectually stimulating.

You will also find that the opportunity offered by Summer School extends further than world-class teaching. The programme is a learning experience made unique by  a truly diverse mix of participants drawn from over 80 countries and with an eclectic range of backgrounds.  Whilst many participants are current graduate or undergraduate students, the programme attracts significant professional representation.  We regularly host representatives from the United Nations, Government bodies, and leading international banks.

All Summer School participants are considered part of the wider LSE community and are afforded the same rights and privileges as regular students, so you will quickly feel integrated into the heart of the School.  There is an organised social programme affording opportunity to meet and relax with your course teachers and fellow participants. The atmosphere around campus is convivial and interactive, you may develop friendships which will last well beyond the programme.

Aside from the course you are taking at the School, the most important aspect of your time in London is likely to be the place in which you live and the Summer School programme can provide accommodation in one the 4 available residences.  The residences are all located in central London and are a short walk or journey from the LSE.

Whilst the Summer School involves an intense period of study for its participants, it also provides an opportunity to travel in Europe or the United Kingdom during the weekends or before and after the programme.  The LSE and it’s residences are well served by good transport connections and so London’s airports or the Eurostar are a short journey away.

The Summer School Office welcomes enquiries from prospective students whether you have a question about making an application, information about the content of courses or want to find out about spending a Summer in London.
