| |
| English is today a recognised global
language: |
- It is estimated that over 300 million people use English
as a foreign language
- English enjoys a special status in a number of countries
as a second language or as an ‘official’ language.
|
| In addition, English is the preferred
language of many spheres of work such as IT , diplomacy and
business communications. There is also a demand for
interpreters and translators. There is consequently a growing
need for well-qualified experts in English to compete for work
in a global market. |
| The BA/BSc Applied English Studies programme
at Roehampton is for students who do not speak English as
their primary language. International students have the
opportunity to study English at degree level in a country in
which it is spoken. Furthermore, the programme helps you to
become an expert in the language as well as to develop your
proficiency. Many students of English experience the feeling
that they are speaking correctly but people find what they say
amusing because it is inappropriate for that particular
situation. Many students report that they have studied English
to a very high level in their country but do not understand
English when it is spoken to them, have difficulty listening
to lectures in English or following English programmes on TV.
The AES programme will help you to understand how English
operates in the language and how choices are made so that you
become confident and proficient communicators in English. In
addition you can select options to further your interest in
English-speaking cultures, English literature or English
language. |
| The BA/BSc Applied English Studies programme
at Roehampton is a combined honours degree. This means that
you can develop your expertise in another subject area as well
as English. For instance, you can study Applied English
Studies and Business or Applied English Studies and
Psychology. You can choose from a list of nearly 40 subjects
offered at Roehampton to combine with Applied English Studies.
See the prospectus pages for a list of combinations. |
| Classes are lively and interactive. Classes
are intimate and friendly. You have many opportunities to
experiment with your English and discuss and debate current
ideas and issues about language and culture and to meet
students representing a wide range of cultural and linguistic
backgrounds. |
| Do you want to know how to speak in a range
of informal and formal situations? Do you want to know the
difference between British and American English? Do you want
to about the rules that govern English conversation? Do you
want to know about British fashion? Do you want to know how
men and women talk in English can be different? Come and find
out on our programme. |

| The TESOL programme at Roehampton is a single
honours degree. It is unique in providing a sound base for a career
in TESOL whatever you personal interest may be, from classroom
teaching in different settings, through to administration and
post-graduate research. |
| Although the programme is single honours, it
offers the possibility of following one or more pathways in English
Language and Linguistics, English Literature, Education, Spanish and
French. This means that you can choose modules outside the TESOL set
to widen your knowledge of other related subjects. |
| The programme is open to both students with
English as their mother tongue and to speakers of other languages.
This means that our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds
and from different countries with no fewer than eight different
languages and cultures represented at any one time. This
multicultural setting, added to the small size of our classes and
the friendly atmosphere, make studying TESOL at Roehampton an
enriching experience. |
| Are you interested in language and how it works?
Have you ever wondered how people learn language? Are you curious
about different learning styles? Then TESOL may just be the course
