The School of Languages has a national and international reputation for translation and interpreting. The Masters in Translating (French, German, Italian, Greek and Spanish), Interpreting and translating (French, German and Spanish), Chinese/English/Chinese Translating with Interpreting, Arabic/English Translation and Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting combine a coherent academic curriculum with a strong vocational focus . The various programmes draw on the School’s expertise in the area of translation and interpreting and lead to excellent career opportunities.These full-time, nine month-long taught modular programmes (also available part-time over 18 months) have attracted postgraduate students from both the United Kingdom and abroad for over twenty years. Their distinctive strengths include:

- State-of-the-art Language Resource Centre including Conference Interpreting booths, satellite television and Multimedia equipment.

- Salford is a member of PLUG (Professional Languages at Universities Group) and therefore recognised as a provider of interpreters and translators by the European Commission Interpreting Service (SCIC) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)
Aims of the programmes: To develop the techniques required for translation and interpreting in an increasingly competitive and computer-oriented professional environment, and to help students to reflect on their own practice. Students generally work into and out of English and one or two languages. During the summer vacation following the completion of the taught courses, students wishing to be awarded the MA prepare a dissertation to be submitted in September.
Syllabus: Core modules include Specialised Translation (technical, medical and legal) into and from English; Lexicography and Terminology; Principles and Strategies of Translation; Information Technology and Professional Skills for translators.and two option choices from Audiovisual translation, Business interpreting, to other languages studied at beginner or advanced level (options are simultaneous and consecutive interpreting for the Interpreting stream).Students also attend Keynote Lectures, specialised translation seminars and business practice seminars, held by professionals in the field. A series of research skills lectures, together with research seminars on Translation and Interpreting Studies are also organised by the European Studies Research Institute of the University of Salford.

Language Resource Centre
The
Language Resource Centre is an open acess multimedia facility
open to staff in the School of Languages and students registered
on approved courses in the School of Languages. All facilities
are available for hire.The Centre has a large collection of print, DVD, video and audio materials in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. A more limited selection of material is available in other languages. A number of language software packages can be accessed on the computers.
