Computer Science is primarily concerned with information processes, the structure and procedures needed to represent them, and the systems needed to implement them.  Spanning a broad spectrum of basic and applied sub disciplines which range from foundations in logic and computational complexity of algorithms through compilers, operating systems, and databases, the discipline continues to expand in terms of new architectures, networks, vision, robotics, and computer-aided design.

Computer Science is an exciting and rewarding discipline.  It is an attractive major for the in-coming freshman and also for the continuing student who is considering a new field of study. 

The Department of Computer Sciences offers three degree programs, they are:

• Computer Sciences Bachelor's Degree

• Computer and Information Science Bachelor's and Associate's Degrees

• Informatics Bachelor's and Associate's Degrees

Online courses are offered in the CIS and INF degree programs for the

The Computer Science Program

The Department of Computer Science offers a BS degree program in Computer Science.  The program is broad, rigorous, and structured in a way that supports in-depth and systematic study of algorithmic processes – their theory, analysis, design, efficiency, implementation, and application.  It trains students to think creatively and logically, to solve large and complex problems, and to communicate with clarity and precision.  It sets the stage for graduate study or immediate employment in a wide variety of careers in science, business and industry. 

The computer industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the economy the world over, with opportunities in computer science at their highest point in recent years.  The program’s coverage of modern operating systems, database management systems, theory of computation, software engineering, and programming languages such as C, C++, JAVA, and Visual BASIC positions the undergraduate for success in the marketplace: commerce, industry and government research laboratories.  The program also prepares the student for graduate work in areas such as database systems, software engineering, theoretical computer science, programming languages, and algorithms.

Recipients of the BS degree, will, in addition have substantial depth and breadth in mathematics and physics.  The mix of courses (e.g., computer science, math, physics, bible, social science) provides students with a broad educational base and helps fashion their abilities to better engage in critical thinking and problem solving.

Associates and Bachelor's degree in Computer & Information Science

The Department of Computer Sciences offers both Associate (AS) and Bachelor's (BS) of Science degrees in Computer & Information Science. The program provides good foundation in computer and information
science.  

Recipients of the either degree will find many opportunities for employment in computer programming and application development. Recipients of the Associates degree may transfer into the Bachelor's degree program as a junior upon completion of the Associate degree requirements.

Informatics: Mapping The Information Highway

Information is everywhere and is vital for the success of individuals and organizations.  In this information explosion era, having the right information at the right time, in the right median is basic for success but often difficult to attain.  Employers seek individuals who understand informatics-related concepts and have the skills needed to implement them.

A degree in informatics provides students with expertise needed to evaluate information, organize it efficiently, index it for retrieval, preserve it for history and ensure its usability.   Students gain an understanding of information behavior and policy, learn effective procedures for implementation and assessment of information systems, and develop strategies for enhancing user satisfaction in the information-seeking process.  A degree in Informatics enables students to seek positions where data, systems and people come together.
