Florida's Bright Futures Scholarships
SFHS Agriculture Gold Seal Programs:
Veterinary Assisting, Animal Science, Nursery Operations.

Requirements:

  1. Complete three specific credit (courses) in a program.
  2. Earn a 3.5 GPA in those specific courses.
  3. Graduate with a 3.0 GPA in 15 required graduation courses.
  4. Enter a Florida public vocational center, community college, university or an accredited private school.
  5. ANNUAL AWARD $ (75% of college tuition at a public school or equivalent at a private school).

 

The Academy of Veterinary & Animal Science Technology

"Veterinary Assisting"

Veterinary Assisting is a Tech Prep program articulated with the Veterinary Technology Associate of Science Degree Program at St. Petersburg Junior College (SPJC). Students are on-line during class with (SPJC) instructors. Students successfully completing will receive a Veterinary Assisting Certificate from SPJC and are employable as veterinary assistants as well as animal keepers, dog groomers, sales person, or stable attendants. Program completers may receive credit for four college courses while in high school and continue their education at the post secondary level.

Learning activities prepare students to provide services in the breeding, care, feeding, training, selection, health care, grooming, and showing of animals. FFA Chapter activities and participation in local, state, and national contests, provides leadership training and exploration into many agriculture careers.

  • A "state of the art" vocational facility is scheduled for completion during the 1998-99 school year. It includes an Agriculture Education Lab, classrooms, greenhouse, and animal science lab. SFHS also has a 30-acre land lab which includes 17 brood cows, a vegetable garden, forestry plot, and an environmental horticulture facility

 

Selection Process
for the Academy of Veterinary & Animal Science Technology

Ideally you should apply prior to your ninth or tenth grade year.

Fill out the application request form on this brochure, obtain a parent signature, and mail or deliver to SFHS by March 10.

Also you should:

  • Have a sincere desire to explore career opportunities in Veterinary Assisting and Animal Science.
  • Make a commitment to complete the program and to fulfill on-the-job training and internship requirements.
  • Have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average prior to applying.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and eagerness to learn.
  • Have no criminal record, discipline infractions or illegal drug use.
