Dakota has a continental climate with four distinct
seasons, ranging from very cold, dry winters to hot and
semi-humid summers. During the summers, the average high
temperature throughout the state is often close to 90 °F
(32 °C), although it generally cools down to near 60 °F
(15 °C) at night. In 2000,
658,245 South Dakotans—93.5% of the resident population
five years of age or older—spoke only English at home.
The United States dollar,
denoted by USD or the symbol $, is the official currency
used in the United States. Commonly referred to as the
"American dollar," the currency is divided into 100
cents (symbol ˘) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2009, South
Dakota has an estimated population of 812,383, an
increase of 57,548, or 7.6%, since the year 2000.[68]
7.3% of South Dakota's population were reported as under
5, 24.7% under 18, and 14.4% were 65 or older. Pierre is the capital of the U.S. state
of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County.[5]
The population was 13,646 at the 2010 census, making it
the second least populous state capital after
Montpelier, Vermont. |
