Study at Barrett Elementary School Alabama United States
In 1925, the first floor of an additional unit was erected, with the second and third floors added in 1928. Today this is the central portion of the existing building. This addition contained thirteen classrooms, a small music room, and the school office. The school lunchroom, built later, is attached to this unit. The 1901 structure was torn down in 1955 and replaced with a wing attached to the brick building erected in 1925 and 1928. Classes moved into this addition in December of 1956 which contained seventeen classrooms and a library. In 1960, a two-story east wing was completed. Classes moved into this wing in the fall of 1961. Barrett School was completely renovated during the summer of 1978. New windows, carpet in many areas, lower ceilings, improved lighting, decorator colors, and air conditioning have combined a rich academic tradition to produce an atmosphere which is very conducive to learning. A city bond issue provided the funds for remodeling. In 1989, the Birmingham Board of Education went through a reorganization process, closing some schools and creating middle schools from former high schools. As a result, the enrollment configuration of Barrett School changed from kindergarten through eighth grade to kindergarten through fifth grade. Barrett's nickname is "Wildcats" and the school colors are green and white. |
