The Auburn University Intensive English Program (IEP) offers intensive English instruction, orientation to American culture, and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation to international students and scholars from throughout the world. This program is designed for those who are not completely proficient in English and who would like to improve their English skills in a pleasant, academic environment.

The IEP is open to persons eighteen years of age or older who have already attained a basic knowledge of English. IEP participants are students preparing for study in an American university, business people and professionals seeking to improve their English communication skills, and visitors to the United States who want to study English while becoming familiar with American culture.

Course Description

The IEP offers 25 hours of intensive English language training per week as follows: A Core Course (2 hours daily) consists of instruction in English grammar, writing, and spoken communication skills. Topics in American culture are covered in the Reading and Vocabulary class, which meets every day for one hour. A Conversation class meets daily for one hour to practice English conversation skills and to reinforce the content of the Reading Course. This course consists of spoken communication exercises such as interviewing, small group discussions, role plays, and debates. A practice TOEFL class meets three times per week, and practice TOEFL tests are administered throughout the term. In order to keep the classes small, we limit the class size to 15 students. In addition, IEP students are assigned two or more hours each week in our computerized Language Lab for pronunciation practice and reinforcement of speaking and listening skills. An ESL instructor or teaching assistant supervises the Language Lab activities.
