Study at University of California Los Angeles

 

University of California - Los Angeles, also known as UCLA, was established in 1919. On an average, the institution enrolls over 30,000 students every year. A wide selection of degrees from the fields of science, mathematics, and liberal arts are offered to students.

The institution's sports teams are popularly called the Bruins or the UCLA Bruins. The official mascots are Joe and Josephine Bruin. The university has men's and women's teams in basketball, volleyball, cross country, soccer, golf, tennis, and water polo. There is also a women's team in gymnastics and another in rowing.

Late Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg (1912-1999), an alumnus of UCLA, won the Nobel Prize in 1951 for discovering Plutonium. Jared Diamond, a professor of geography, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for his nonfiction titled "Guns, Germs, and Steel". Many other professors and alumni have also received various awards related to their fields of work.

One of the good things about the school is its wide range of programs leading to degrees. Students at UCLA often study science, mathematics, and liberal arts.

UCLA Selectivity

The admissions department at the school does not accept all those who apply. In 2007, 74% of applicants were rejected at UCLA. Most students' verbal SAT scores were in the range of 570 to 680 in 2007. A quarter of students admitted in 2007 scored 720 or higher on the math SAT.

Faculty

The school's tenure system is geared toward rewarding and keeping the most valuable professors. By paying its faculty better than most schools, the school tries to attract and retain a high quality teaching staff.

Student Enrollment

UCLA offers classes to 37,476 students (36,733 full-time equivalent). Minorities are common at the school.

Student Life

Many students live in housing on or near campus. The school does offer meal plans to students. Students sports include formal participation in Pacific-10 Conference competitions.
