Study at Valdosta State University Georgia

Valdosta State University is a regional university located on 180 acres of land near the heart of Valdosta, a moderately sized city with the perfect combination of small town charm and metropolitan convenience. The main campus features beautifully preserved Spanish Mission architecture, attractively landscaped by palms, azaleas and native plant-life.

The university’s comprehensive curriculum serves students in the heart of South Georgia. More than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend Valdosta State from almost every county in Georgia, 46 states, two U.S. territories and more than 60 countries. The size of the student body enables the university to offer students close relationships with professors, through a student to professor ratio of 21 to 1.

Five colleges — Fine Arts, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education and Nursing — as well as a graduate division, offer 56 undergraduate degrees (including bachelor’s, technical and associate degrees), 46 graduate degrees, a doctor of education with three majors and an online doctor of public administration.

Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, VSU’s nationally accredited programs include applied and clinical sociology, art, business, communication disorders, education, music, nursing, psychology, sports medicine, theatre, master of public administration and master of social work.

Valdosta State University is an innovator in the use of technology to enhance instruction. The university affords opportunities for distance learning at off-campus locations throughout its South Georgia region, including Kings Bay Naval Base on the east coast of Georgia and Moody Air Force Base in Lowndes County. The Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration offers a collaborative WebMBA program with four other Georgia universities. The college of Arts and Sciences offers a Web-based MPA program, in addition to an on-campus program, and a Web-based DPA program. These degrees serve qualified and highly motivated professionals through the opportunity to earn accredited degrees with little interruption to their work and personal lives.

Valdosta State offers its students a variety of ways to participate. More than 140 active student organizations exist on campus, including 20 Greek social organizations, 10 faith-based campus ministry groups, numerous intramural opportunities, and many service and academic clubs. For students who like to stay active, a $9.7 million Campus Recreation center offers a variety of services such as a comprehensive intramural program, club sports, outdoor trips, fitness consulting, aerobics and a 27-foot climbing wall.

Varsity “Blazers” compete in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf and cross-country. “Lady Blazers” compete in basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball and cross-country. VSU is a NCAA II member institution and competes in the Gulf South Conference. The VSU Blazer Football Team won the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship, and the VSU Men’s Tennis Team won the 2006 Division II National Championship.

Founded in 1906, the institution was named the South Georgia State Normal College for young ladies in 1914. In 1922, a legislative act changed the name to Georgia State Woman's College and authorized a four-year program leading to the bachelor's degree. The Board of Regents made the College co-educational in 1950, changing the name to Valdosta State College. VSC became Valdosta State University in 1993.
