Northwestern State University of Louisiana is also known as NSU. It is a four-year university located in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The nursing campus is at Shreveport and the general campuses are situated in Leesville/ Fort Polk and Alexandria. Northwestern State University is a part of the University of Louisiana System. NSU was founded in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School. The main purpose of this university was to provide training to teachers. It was the first school in Louisiana to offer degree programs in nursing and business education. The university offers over 50 degree programs in various disciplines for the benefit of the students. NSU's athletics teams are nicknamed the Demons, with the mascot being "Vic the Demon." Sports like football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball are commonly played here.
