The University of New England (UNE), founded in 1831, is an independent coed university with campuses in two coastal cities (Portland and Biddeford) in the state of Maine. The University offers degree programs in health sciences, natural sciences, human services, management, education and the liberal arts. UNE's Department of Education offers a variety of professional education programs designed for practicing teachers. of particular interest are four Master of Science in Education (MSEd) programs and one Certificate program which can be completed online as part of UNE's Distance Education initiative.

Course Topics

UNE offers four innovative Master of Science in Education (MSEd) programs completely online. These programs are designed for teachers wishing to strengthen their classroom practice. Degrees are available in the following concentrations:

  • MSEd in Inclusion Education
  • MSEd in Literacy (K-12)
  • MSEd in Educational Leadership
  • MSEd in Curriculum & Instruction Strategies

Also offered online is a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Advanced Educational Leadership program. This program is targeted for professional educators in pursuit of upper-level school administrator positions.

The University of New England Admissions

Applicants to the online graduate programs in education can apply online through the University's website. The site can also be used to access Supplemental Application and Reference Forms, and to subsequently check application status.

The University of New England Faculty Quality

The UNE Department of Education faculty is very highly qualified. All of its members hold advanced degrees and about 75% of the faculty holds doctorates.

The University of New England Student Enrollment

Students enrolled in UNE's online graduate programs in education are primarily K-12 educators who wish to advance in their careers and/or enhance their existing skills without having to disrupt their professional and private lives. Total enrollment at UNE as of 2007 was approximately 3,250 students.

The University of New England Student Life

Students enrolled in the University's distance learning programs have full access to state-of-the art information technology and on-line library resources. Included in these resources are more than 21,000 online full-text journal titles. "U-Online" provides students with secure, web-based access to selected academic and administrative information. The Blackboard Learning System is a course management system with teaching and learning tools for course preparation, delivery, and management. "MyUNE" is the electronic interface which embodies services such as email, personal schedules, and campus calendars.
