The University of Massachusetts Boston, also referred to as "Umass Boston", is a public, coeducational, research college located in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It was originally established as Boston State College in 1852 but was renamed UMass Boston in 1964. Every year the university grants admission to over 12,000 students worldwide. The school offers several majors in the fields of therapy and counseling and liberal arts. Online courses in various fields are offered to overseas students.

The sports teams of the university are known as The Beacons. The official mascot of UMass Boston is The Beacon. The school sponsors men's teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, track and field, soccer, and tennis. For women, the university sponsors baseball, basketball, cross country, ice hockey, lacrosse, track and field, soccer, tennis, softball, and volleyball teams. The institute also has a competitive sailing team.
