Michigan Technological University, also known as Michigan Tech or MTU, is a public university located in Houghton, Michigan, United States. It was established in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School. After a few name and status changes, it gained university status in 1964. The university offers more than 120 degree programs through the following academic division: MTU’s official mascot is the Husky, and its sports teams are known as the Huskies. They compete in the NCAA's Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The campus of Michigan Technological University is in Houghton, MI, which is a self-contained town.
