The population of Uruguay in 2003 was
estimated by the United Nations at 3,415,000, which
placed it as number 126 in population among the 193
nations of the world. In that year approximately 13% of
the population was over 65 years of age, with another
25% of the population under 15 years of age. |
| Capital City: |
Montevideo is the largest city, the
capital, and the chief port of Uruguay. The settlement
was established in 1726 by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, as
a strategic move amidst a Spanish-Portuguese dispute
over the platine region, and as a counter to the
Portuguese colony at Colonia del Sacramento. |
