Senegal Education
The local
climate is tropical with well-defined dry and humid
seasons that result from northeast winter winds and
southwest summer winds. French is
the official language of Senegal, but most people speak
Wolof. Besides French and Wolof, people speak the
language of their ethnic group, such as Pulaar, Serer,
and thirty-eight other African languages. Senegal currency is the medium of
exchange for goods and services in Senegal. The official
currency of Senegal is CAF Franc. CAF Franc is
abbreviated as XOF and it is being used in Senegal since
French colonial period. The currency was introduced in
1945 to replace the French Franc. The population of Senegal in 2003 was
estimated by the United Nations at 10, 095, 000, which
placed it as number 77 in population among the 193
nations of the world. In that year approximately 3% of
the population was over 65 years of age, with another
44% of the population under 15 years of age. Dakar is the capital city and largest
city of Senegal. It is located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula
on the Atlantic coast and is the westernmost city on the
African mainland.
