Taiwan's climate is marine tropical.The northern part of the island has a rainy season that lasts from January through late March during the northeast monsoon, and experiences meiyu in May.The entire island experiences hot, humid weather from June through September. The middle and southern parts of the island do not have an extended monsoon season during the winter months. Natural hazards such as typhoons and earthquakes are common in the region.

The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese (Guoyu), but because many Taiwanese are of southern Fujianese descent, Min-nan (the Southern Min dialect, or Holo) is also widely spoken. The smaller groups of Hakka people and aborigines have also preserved their own languages.

The Taiwan currency is known by the name of New Taiwan Dollar. The New Taiwan Dollar can be divided into four sections that fall under the categories of New Taiwan paper money and New Taiwan coins.

The total population in Taiwan grew to 23.2 million in 2010 from 17.9 million in 1980, a 130 percent increase in just 50 years. Taiwan has 0.34 percent of the world´s total population which means that one person in every 298 people on the planet is a resident of Taiwan.

Taipei City is the capital of the Republic of China (ROC, commonly known as "Taiwan") and the central city of the largest metropolitan area of Taiwan.
